Our History

July 07, 2017

Carterton Community Toy Library was opened in 1985 by Mayor Barry Keys after a passionate group of people joined the New Zealand Toy Library Federation, sourced premises (an old maternity laundry room) in the Ron Wakelin Centre. They spent many months fundraising and sourcing toys for the library. Over time the library grew too big and relocated to an empty classroom at South End School. A paid librarian was hired and together with a roster of volunteers the toy library was open 4 hours per week.

Our Present

July 07, 2017

In 2012 the Carterton Community Toy Library relocated to the newly built Carterton Event Centre within the public library. We are now open 6 days per week and work with the public librarians who issue and return our toys. We employ a toy librarian for 3 mornings per week to help our members find their next hire, join up new members, order and catalogue all new stock and keep all the stock in great working order amongst numerous other jobs! We are still run by a volunteer committee who meet monthly for adminstration purposes and are passionate about children's learning and development. (Though secretly we just like playing with the toys!)

Our Future

July 07, 2017

With ongoing community support and funding from generous charity trusts we will continue to update our stock regularly and provide this valuable service to our community. We are always looking for more committee members so if you are interested in being part of a small but hardworking team please contact us.
